Using Data to Drive Performance and Innovation
Professor Jorrit deJong, Director, Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University and Faculty member at the Harvard Kennedy School
Modern organizations need to be agile and innovative to deal with complex problems and ever changing circumstances. But how can you build the organizational capabilities to do that? This session will explore the central role that leadership plays in creating a culture of curiosity and a commitment to continuous improvement.
PREPARATION
While reading the case, please consider the following questions:
- When Curtatone leaves office, what do you predict would remain of the data capabilities he built over the past eighteen years? What would fall away if a new mayor does not sufficiently pay attention to it?
- If you were the incoming mayor after Curtatone, what would you keep, stop, and start doing?
- What did Mayor Curtatone do to make Somerville City Hall more data-informed?
- Thinking about your own context, where is your organization strong with regards to the use of data and where is room for improvement? What are you doing to promote curiosity in your organization?
